MP Report: Office of Religious Freedom

Dear Friends, As I reflect upon our Easter celebrations this past weekend I am reminded that so many around the world do not have the basic human right of worshipping as they choose free from persecution. In the last Parliament, our Conservative Government created the Office of Religious Freedom within Canada's department of Foreign Affairs. Due to the Liberal’s lack of support, its work ended as it was scheduled to sunset yesterday. In an attempt to pressure the Liberals to support the continuation of this Office, we proposed the following Conservative motion which was debated on March 21. That the [...]

MP Kelly Block Condemns Liberal Inaction for Southern Saskatchewan Worker

March 31, 2016 – Saskatoon, SK Today, during an announcement in Saskatoon, the Liberal Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, the Honourable MaryAnn Mihychuk, insulted unemployed workers in southern Saskatchewan. Kelly Block, Member of Parliament for Carlton Trail – Eagle Creek expressed disappointment that the Minister is deliberately ignoring the plight of unemployed Saskatchewan workers in the southern region of the province. “Workers in Saskatchewan’s southern oil fields are hurting just as much as those in other regions,” said MP Block. “Additionally, the low price of oil has negatively affected businesses and employees who provide services and products [...]

Petition: Support the renewal of the mandate of the Office of Religious Freedom

Download Petition Form (PDF) As your Member of Parliament, it is important to ensure that all voices are represented in our public discussions, including Canadians of faith. I have noticed that faith perspectives can be ignored in our public discourse and this is concerning. I am committed to ensuring that we have an ongoing dialogue in which no voices or perspectives are left out. I am working on an issue that might be of interest to you and I welcome your feedback. In the last Parliament, our government created an Office of Religious Freedom within Canada's department of [...]

Conservative MP Kelly Block frustrated by Finance Minister’s High Tax, High Spend Plan for Canadians

March 22nd, 2016 – Ottawa, ON Today in the House of Commons, the Minister of Finance introduced his first budget and finally confirmed what has been long suspected; in less than 5 months the Liberals have taken Canada from a budget surplus to a massive deficit. This deficit is significantly larger than the “modest” deficit promised by the Liberal Party during the 2015 federal campaign. Kelly Block, Member of Parliament for Carlton Trail – Eagle Creek and Transport Critic for her Majesty’s Official Opposition expressed disappointment that the Minister of Finance is busy indebting future generations with his spending [...]

MP Report: My Work as Transport Critic

Dear friends, I’d like to provide you with an update on my work as the Official Opposition Critic for Transport this week. Last November, just days after being appointed to his new role, the Minister of Transport took to Twitter to announce that he would block any future expansion of the Billy Bishop Toronto Island airport. In fewer than 140 characters, the Minister of Transport unilaterally blocked the right of the City of Toronto to hold consultations and decide whether to allow their local airport to expand and grow along with the city. As the critic appointed to hold the [...]

MP Report: Long-Term Liberal Deficits

Dear friends, Over the past several months, our Conservative opposition has been relentlessly questioning the Liberal government on its plan to run significant long term deficits. Last week, the Finance Minister confirmed that the deficit would be at least $18 billion and did nothing to ease concerns that it could rise as high as $30 billion by the end of the year. Considering the federal budget was in surplus as recently as December 2015, this minimum $18 billion deficit is a shocking turn in Canada’s federal fiscal position. The Liberals are trying to spin their huge deficit by saying that [...]

MP Report: Physician Assisted Suicide

Dear friends, On February 6, 2015 in its ruling Carter v. Canada, 2015, the Supreme Court of Canada unanimously struck down Canada’s longstanding criminal prohibition against voluntary euthanasia and assisted suicide (physician-assisted dying), ruling that it was in contravention of the right to life, liberty, and security of the person guaranteed under Section 7 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The Supreme Court gave the Government until June 6th 2016 to introduce legislation that would in effect make physician assisted suicide legal. Consequently, one of the first acts of the 42nd Parliament was to strike a committee to hear [...]
